‘After a swim in the sea, we headed up into the town to look for a place to eat. We took a path under the dappled shade of vines, lined with stalls and shops. Then suddenly a vast opening to the right revealed a courtyard bathed in sunlight and the soft glow of terracotta. The opening reached higher than the vanishing tops of palm trees.’
